Foreigners of Dhaka for 400 years

The Governor General of India, Lord Cornwallis, made a proposal to the British Government in 1790. There he said that a very shameful incident has happened for the British nation. Thousands of British nationals who came to Bengal in search of fortune are living inhumane lives. Many were thrown into jail as vagrants and criminals. Strict restrictions were imposed to prevent the arrival of fortune-seeking British citizens in Bengal. From that year, any British citizen was prohibited from coming to Bengal without permission from the East India Company or the government. As Sirajul Islam has shown in detail in his historian's notebook, the British citizens at that time had a belief that Kellafat would be the only way to gain foothold in Banglamulu.
The history of Bengal's prosperity lives up to the legend. Not only the British, but many European nations have repeatedly come to Bengal to change their fortunes with the touch of that prosperity. Many of them have also built permanent settlements. In this context, a comment of the famous French tourist Francois Bernier has been remembered forever. He said, 'There are a hundred gates to enter the kingdom of Bengal, but not a single one to exit.' He came to Bengal twice in 1666 and 1670. At that time, Europe thought that Egypt was the richest country in the world. But Bernier's idea changed when he came to Bengal. Seeing the prosperity of Bengal, he said to this country, 'Bangla is the world's silver basin.' This prosperity drew the Portuguese, Dutch, Armenians, French, English and Greeks here like moths attracted by the light.
Dhaka, the capital of Bengal, the city of muslin, the city of narrow fragrant rice, the city of unimaginable cheapness, had become their dream city—the destination of fortune. Many of them could not overcome the magic of this city and return to their homeland. Stayed here. In the evolution of time, the capital of this once richest country in the world is in ruins today. But the memory of that glory, the various structures and monuments of citizens of once poor, now rich countries who came in search of fortune still remind the glory days of this metropolis.

The Mogul
Mughals are credited with giving Dhaka the status of capital. Emperor Jahangir's commander Subadar Islam Khan came here after a long journey and laid down the capital in 1610. During their time, it became one of the best cities in the world at that time, covered with trade and commerce, beauty, eye-catching buildings and gardens.

The Dutch
Indian spices were more expensive than gold in Europe. It was for that spice that the second Europeans who arrived in India along the water line shown by the Portuguese, were the Dutch. The date of their arrival in Dhaka is also unknown. They set up huts near Mitford Hospital in 1663. They also had a garden house in Tejgaon. The Dutch did not succeed in trade. Taylor mentions that there were 32 Dutch families in Dhaka in 1783. To the British they handed over the relief and property and left the city of Dhaka. As mentioned in M Hasan Dani's Dhaka book, the grave of Kuthi Pradhan de Langhit dated 1775 in Narinda Christian Cemetery is the only surviving monument of the Dutch in Dhaka.

The French
The Farashganj area of old Dhaka carries the memory of the French in Dhaka. Naib Nazim Nawazish Khan of Dhaka allowed the French to settle the ganj in 1726 and they built a settlement called Frenchganj. Later it was popularly called Farashganj. But before that, the French arrived in Dhaka. Syed Mohammad Taifur mentions in the book Glimpses of Old Dhaka that the French first invaded Tejgaon in 1726. They mainly traded in muslin cloth. But they did not get along with the British. Talpitalpa left here after the battle of Palashi.

Portuguese
The Portuguese were the first Europeans to come to Dhaka. They are credited with discovering the waterways to India. Vasco da Gama docked his ship in Calicut port in 1498. The objective is to get the spices of India. Along that route came many more Europeans. It is not known exactly when the Portuguese first came to Dhaka. The Portuguese priest and tourist maestro Fray Sebastian Manrique visited Bengal three times in the seventeenth century. He first traveled to 'Bangdesh' on his way to Arakan in 1628 or 29. He mentioned that the Portuguese had arrived in Bangladesh at least 100 years before this (Bangal History: Asim Kumar Roy, Sebastien Manrique's Travel to Bangladesh).
James Taylor mentions in his book Dhaka during the company period, the Portuguese settled in Dhaka in the middle of the 16th century. They set up huts in Tejgaon area. However, it is not clear how long the Portuguese did business in Dhaka. Historian Muntasir Mamun mentions in his book Dhaka: Smriti Bismriti Nagari that in 1832 there were 41 Portuguese houses in Dhaka. They lived in Islampur, Sharafganj and Nawabpur.

The English
The British came to India in 1600. Historians think that their presence in Dhaka is probably around 1658. As the Portuguese and the Dutch came later, the British did not get a foothold in important areas of the city. Their first trading post was established in the suburbs, in the Khamarbari area of present-day Tejgaon. According to Taylor, the first British factory was established in Dhaka in 1666. The British tried to stay close to Subadar. Within a few years they shifted their quarters near Bahadur Shah Park and in 1678 were able to obtain duty-free trade from the Nawab by paying tribute. Muslin cloth was their main business. The subsequent history is known to all. Muntasir Mamun wrote, 'After gaining Dewani, the British were more anxious. Then the ax was no longer needed. Because the whole country was theirs then.

Greek
The Greeks made a lot of money by trading in salt and jute. According to historians, they were the last Europeans to come to Dhaka. According to James Taylor, Argiri, the founder of the Calcutta Greek community, lived in Dhaka and died in 1777. Many came after him. Muntasir Mamun mentioned, when the Greeks came, it is not known. But in 1832 there were 21 families in Dhaka. They also established a church in Dhaka. The Greeks of Dhaka used to marry among the local residents. But they were short lived. Their graveyard was next to the race course. A Greek grave in the TSC premises of Dhaka University is their memorial. Apart from Dhaka, Greeks also lived in Narayanganj. In 1956, Rally brothers started a jute mill named Rally Brothers.

Kashmiri
The Nawab family of Dhaka is one of the Kashmiris who gained fame and prestige in Dhaka. The progenitor of this family, Abdal Hakim, first settled in Sylhet during the reign of Nawab Alivardi Khan. Later they came to Dhaka. Gained great wealth in salt and leather business. Professor Sirajul Islam mentioned in the historian's notebook book, Abdal Hakim's brother Abdullah moved from Sylhet to Dhaka after closing his business. His son Hafizullah increased his fortune by doing joint business with the Armenians and in 1812 bought a zamindari in Bakerganj. The childless Hafizullah was succeeded by his brother Khwaja Alimullah. His son Nawab Abdul Ghani. He inherited the title of Nawab from the British government. His son Nawab Ahsanullah and his son Nawab Salimullah. This family's contribution to health, education, cultural practices and urban development is huge, including the introduction of clean water and electricity systems in Dhaka. Their descendants are still living in Dhaka.

Armenian
Like Farashganj, Armanitola and its ancient church, Pogz School, Rooplal House bear witness to the golden age of Armenians in Dhaka. They are also credited with introducing horse-drawn carriages in Dhaka. There are details about the Armenians in Huday Nath's Dhaka city book by Muntasir Mamun. He said, "The arrival time of the Armenians is unknown. Perhaps they started coming to Dhaka from the seventeenth century. They are rich in salt, jute and cloth trade. Social influence also increased. Also bought estates in Bhola, Barisal region.' Among the influential Armenian families of the 19th century were Pogz, Aratun, Paniati, Koza Michael, Manuk etc. In Dhaka, they built several beautiful homes to live in. Rooplal House has already been mentioned. The current Buffa building was the home of Niki Pogoz. His ax was in Armanitola. The church of Armanitola was built in 1781. At the end of the 19th century, their trade declined. Many migrated to different European countries.

Chinese and others
The Chinese made considerable progress in the shoe business in Dhaka. They had their factory in the Mitford area. Apart from this, they were also engaged in laundry business.
Iranians came to Dhaka in the seventeenth century. Iraqis came here mainly from Delhi. They are mainly of Shia community. Their community activities are conducted around Hosseini Dalan Imambara. The ancestors of the Banarasi artisans of Dhaka came from Banaras, India. Their main settlement is in Mirpur. Telugu community came to Dhaka in the 19th century. Their descendants still live in the Sayedabad area. This city has crossed the milestone of 400 years as the capital. He does not have the wealth as before, but he has manpower. Can this manpower bring back the glory of Dhaka?
